Five Tips for Staying in Shape in College

For most people, moving to a college dorm is their first experience of living away from their parents. If you have found yourself in this position, you will no doubt understand how easy it can be to pick up unhealthy habits and begin to gain weight.

Luckily, there are a few tips you can follow to stay in shape in college:

1. Stock up on healthy food

Most college dorms come with a fridge, so take advantage of this to stock up on healthy food items such as vegetables, eggs, low-fat milk and yogurt, chicken and others. If you are on a tight budget, consider shopping in bulk at stores like Costco for items like chicken, cheese, grains and cereals, baked goods and olive oil. Ensure that you have ingredients for a complete meal to avoid snacking on unhealthy foods or having to order takeout because you have nothing to eat. Preparing your own healthy meals is one of the best ways to avoid the freshman 15.

2. Find a workout buddy

Working out is often easier if you have an exercise buddy. This is because a workout buddy keeps you more accountable, ensures that you show up for your workout and makes the session more fun. Of course, you will have to get a partner who is equally committed to staying in shape and not one who spends their time guzzling beer or gorging on unhealthy foods.

3. Play a sport

Take advantage of your college’s sports programs to stay in shape. College is one of the best places to play your favorite sport without having to pay too much. In addition, there are a variety of sports to choose from so you will not lack for one that suits your particular tastes or fitness level.

4. Walk everywhere

Skip the college shuttle and walk to and from your classes to drop pounds and stay in shape. Walking is one of the easiest and effective exercises for weight loss, especially when you combine it with a healthy eating plan. Walking is also a great way to take in college scenery (including the human kind) and one of the cheapest ways to stay fit without having to step in the gym.

5. Use YouTube workout videos

YouTube has a wide variety of workouts designed for all fitness levels, space sizes and time constraints. This means that you can find a workout program to fit in before you go to class, discover one that can be done in a small space such as your dorm room or download one that can be completed in ten or twenty minutes if that is all you can spare.

In Closing

It can certainly be a little tough to stay fit and healthy when you first move to college, but it is not impossible. By following the advice put forth in this article, you can stay in shape during your college years and beyond.
